Switching from NiMH to LiPo batteries? You must change your Electronic Speed Control (ESC) settings! Running a LiPo battery in NiMH mode can permanently damage the battery by draining it too low. In this video, I’ll show you the quick button-press sequence to toggle between modes on the Traxxas XL-5 and the VXL-3s.
Why do I need LiPo Mode?
LiPo batteries shouldn't be discharged below a certain voltage. Traxxas ESCs have a built-in "Low Voltage Detection" (LVD) that will cut power to the motor once the battery hits that limit, saving your battery from a "puffed" or dead cell.
The Quick Guide:
For both the XL-5 (Brushed) and VXL (Brushless) ESCs:
Power On: Connect your battery and turn the transmitter on.
Check the Light: * Red Light:
NiMH Mode (LVD is OFF) — Do not use LiPos! Green Light: LiPo Mode (LVD is ON) — Safe for LiPos.
To Switch: * Start with the ESC ON.
Press and hold the EZ-Set button for about 10 seconds.
The motor will emit a descending (NiMH) or ascending (LiPo) tone.
Release the button once the LED color changes.
Pro-Tips for Success:
Safety First: Always unplug your battery when you're done driving. Even in LiPo mode, the ESC draws a tiny bit of power that can drain a battery over several days.
The "Half-Power" Warning: If your car suddenly slows down to 50% throttle, that's the ESC telling you the battery is low. Head back to the pits immediately!
Compatibility: This process works for the Slash, Rustler, Stampede, Bandit, and many other Traxxas 1/10 scale models.
